Startup BizCast #8 – Small Businesses and RSS Feeds (Steve Mullen)

Get each new episode as it’s published: RSSiTunesBlubrryPodcast Ready

SHOW NOTES:

I was recently told by an acquaintance that RSS feeds have been explained to him a number of times, but despite that he still doesn’t understand the technology. This isn’t the first time I’ve heard this. RSS, or Really Simple Syndication, is a great tool for small business owners to get the word out about their company or their offerings. The problem is that it’s difficult to explain.

On Startup BizCast #8, I work without a net (i.e. without an interviewee) to tackle the subject of RSS fees. RSS is a way of making your web-based content available to be viewed in RSS feed readers, re-used by other websites, and easily indexed by search engines. That’s the simple explanation, but the technology can be used a number of ways to the advantage of small business owners. This episode will be broken into chapters (announced by my lovely and talented wife, Jennifer, in her podcast premier!) in an attempt to keep it as simple as humanly possible. I’ll attempt to give an explanation of the system and how it’s used, talk about how to create your own feed, and give some novel uses that can benefit startups and established businesses alike.

NOTE: After listening to this episode, if you have any further questions about RSS please feel free to post them as comments in this blog post. I’ll answer them to the best of my ability!

New Tagline for Startup BizCast

I have changed the tagline (or slogan, if you prefer) for Startup BizCast.

Old: Small business advice from small business owners and other experts

New: The small business advice podcast that’s shorter than your coffee break!

You’ll hear the new tagline starting with Startup BizCast #9.

The change reflects my dedication to keeping this podcast from becoming too long. I understand that small business owners are busy, and don’t have time for a 30 or 60 minute show, particularly those who work from home and don’t have a commute during which to listen. I think 15 minutes is the “sweet spot”. Let me know what you think of the change!

Coming Soon: New Episode with Small Business Advice on RSS Feeds

Another great (well, in my opinion anyhow) episode of Startup BizCast, the podcast that gives you small business advice in less time than it takes to have a coffee break, is on the way! Episode 8 will be a solo episode in which I explain how RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feeds work, why they’re important for small business owners, and some creative examples of how they can be used to benefit small businesses. Also, look for the first ever podcast appearance by my wife!

The episode will publish early tomorrow afternoon, so have your mp3 player warmed up and ready!

Startup BizCast Host Featured on Episode of One Minute How-To

The episode of the podcast One Minute How-To featuring my “How To” was released yesterday afternoon! OMHT is a show where guests try to explain how to do something in one minute or less. I chose to give tips on how to choose a business name. It was a great experience for me, because the show’s host, George Smyth, is such a pro.

Here’s a link to my episode: How To Choose A Name For Your New Business.

A side note — One Minute How-To was just selected as a finalist for the 2007 Podcast Peer Awards in the “Best Short Podcast” category. Congratulations, George! Visit the PPA site to see the full list of finalists. If you are a podcaster, you can participate in the voting of your favorite podcasts in each category of finalists.

If you like Startup BizCast…

If you like Startup BizCast, may I recommend another podcast? I produce a show called Fighting Back for a client. The client is Fight SMA, an international nonprofit organization that’s working to accelerate a treatment or cure for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). SMA is the leading inherited cause of infant death. Fighting Back tells inspirational stories of people and families fighting serious or incurable diseases. I interview folks who have chosen not to take misfortune lying down, and instead are doing something about it.

To listen to episodes, visit the Spinal Muscular Atrophy Blog by Fight SMA or subscribe to the Fighting Back Podcast Feed.

Startup BizCast #7 – Online News Release Tips from PRWeb (Jiyan Wei)

Get new episodes as soon as they’re published: RSSiTunesBlubrryPodcast Ready

SHOW NOTES:

I talked in episode #5 about the best places to distribute your online news release. Now it’s time to talk about how to structure your release and how NOT to structure your release, so you get the most bang for your buck. As I mentioned in my episode preview, I hadn’t planned to talk about news release distribution again so soon, but when I was given the opportunity to interview this week’s guest, I jumped at the opportunity.

The online news release distribution business is booming, as more and more business owners are realizing that distributing online is a great way to let potential customers know about their services and increase their search rankings. In episode 7 of Startup BizCast, a podcast with small business advice provided via interviews with small business owners and other experts, I’m very excited to interview Jiyan Wei. Jiyan is a PRWeb Product Manager for VOCUS, and a great guy. PRWeb is one of the top online news release distribution companies, and is owned by VOCUS. During the interview, Jiyan gives us some “dos and don’ts” for writing and distributing releases online, and also discusses an entirely new type of news release, the social media release.

Coming Soon: New Episode with Interview from PRWeb

It’s that time of the week again! Episode #7 of Startup BizCast is in production and it looks to be a great one. I’ll be interviewing Jiyan Wei. He’s a product manager for PRWeb, one of the leading online news distribution services. I’ve been talking quite a bit about online release distribution in this podcast (see episode #5) because I think it’s a tactic that every small business owner should utilize. I wasn’t planning to come back to the topic so soon, but when I was given the opportunity to pick Jiyan’s brain I couldn’t resist. He’ll talk about how small business owners can get the most from their online releases, and some “dos and don’ts” for writing those releases. The episode will be published tomorrow (Wednesday) so don’t miss it!
