Startup BizCast #37 – IT for your Small Business (Eric Johnson)

Most small businesses, with the exception of highly funded dot-coms, start their lives with the owner doing everything. That “everything” includes taking care of the computers. But, as the business grows, that job may become too big, particularly when you consider all of the other things a small business owner has to deal with. That’s where IT consultants come in. My guest this week is Eric Johnson. He’s the owner of Consortio Services, an IT consulting firm that specializes in small businesses. Eric is also the co-host of CS Techcast, which is a great podcast aimed at IT professionals. Eric tells us how outsourcing your IT needs is something that small business owners can’t afford not to do.

On BizCast Brief, I have news on a rise in small business owner confidence in the economy, and small business organizations jumping into the political fray.

Startup BizCast #36 – Small Business Taxes Pt. 2 (June Walker)

It’s less than two months from the due date for your 2007 tax forms. Does that panic you? It shouldn’t really, but your 2007 taxes should be something that’s on your mind. Last week we spoke with tax and financial advisor June Walker about deductions and how to find a tax professional. In this week’s episode, part two of my two-parter on small business taxes, June will give us advice on business structure and how it affects your tax liability.

As I did last week, I’ve devoted the entire episode to my conversation with June, preempting BizCast Brief. The small business news segment will return next week!

Startup BizCast #35 – Small Business Taxes Pt. 1 (June Walker)

Tax season is quickly creeping up on us. Personally, I haven’t done anything about getting my tax information in order, but I am at least THINKING about it! Because it’s that season, I wanted to make sure you all get a heavy dose of advice about taxes for your small business. So, I’ve decided produce Startup BizCast’s first two part episode. My guest for the next two programs is June Walker, a tax and financial advisor, and author of the book Self-Employed Tax Solutions. June has been advising independent professionals for 25 years. Her clients are the owners of unincorporated small businesses, including sole proprietors, freelancers, subcontractors, free agents, and 1099 workers.

In this episode, June and I spend a good bit of time talking about how to choose a tax professional to work with you this year. We also discuss the all-important deductions that will help save you money. In the second part of our conversation, which will be available on Wednesday, February 20, we’ll talk about how to structure your business to save you money on taxes.

I’ve devoted the entire episode to talking with June, and thus there is no BizCast Brief this week. The segment will return in the future, but in the meantime please check out my Small Business Recommended Reading post for this week.

New Episode Coming Soon: Small Business Taxes

I don’t normally like to preview episodes this early (before the episode is even in production!) but I’m fairly confident there won’t be any problems with this one, and it’s on a topic about which I suspect a lot of people are thinking. In episode 35 of Startup BizCast, I’ll interview June Walker. Ms. Walker is based in New Mexico and has been providing tax advice to “indies” since 1979.  She says an indie is anyone who is a sole proprietor, freelancer, subcontractor, free agent, or 1099 worker. That covers all small business owners who work for themselves and have no employees.  [Editor's Note: Ms. Walker called today to inform me that I didn't have this entirely correct.  She works with unincorporated small businesses, and some of her clients do have employees.  I hope I got it right this time.  Apologies.]

Ms. Walker will provide tax tips for the upcoming filing season and beyond, including answering the all-important question, “How do I choose a tax adviser?” We’re likely to tackle some other business issues that relate to taxes as well.

Episode 35 of Startup BizCast will be available for download on Wednesday, February 13. Make sure you get each episode as soon as it’s available by subscribing via iTunes, RSS, or at podcast directories like Podcast Pickle or Blubrry!

Changes to the Startup BizCast RSS Feed

I made some changes to the RSS feed for this podcast that you should know about.

I noticed that only the most recent 10 episodes were showing up in the feed, and thus on iTunes and in podcast directories. I fixed that so that henceforth all episodes will show up on the RSS feed. Podcast directories like Podcast Alley, Blubrry, and Podcast Pickle should update eventually have updated to reflect the change.  However, if you’re subscribed through iTunes and would like easy access to some of the early episodes of Startup BizCast, you’ll need to delete your subscription and then re-subscribe. If you’re happy just getting all of the newest shows every week, you don’t need to do a thing!

Oh, and if you enjoy this program and have a moment while you’re logged into iTunes, please leave a comment!

Thanks for listening!

Startup BizCast #34 – The Year of the Corporate Blog (Debbie Weil)

In this episode, I had the great pleasure of interviewing Corporate and CEO Blogging and Social Media Consultant Debbie Weil, who was not only a wealth of knowledge, but was also nice enough to be patient while I recovered from a coughing fit during the interview! Debbie talked about her claim that 2008 is the year of the corporate blog, and also gave tips on how to make the most of a business blog.

In BizCast Brief this week: The 2009 budget doesn’t have much money for small businesses, a push for a “Super SBA”, and John Kerry wins during THIS election year.

Technical Note: This is the first podcast recorded with my new and upgraded equipment. I’m now recording through a Samson mixer onto a Zoom H2 digital recorder. The result, I think, is a more rich and full sound. Let me know what you think!
