A day late, and hopefully not a dollar short.

FYI for everyone – Startup BizCast will be published a day later than usual this week.  I was out of town all weekend, which threw off my production schedule.  Expect a new episode on THURSDAY instead of Wednesday.  This week’s topic will be “Twitter for Small Business”.

Thanks for listening!

Back to business this week!

Someone emailed me today commenting that they saw I wasn’t doing an episode this week.  Well, that’s untrue!  I took off last week for a variety of reasons, but this week Startup BizCast will return!  Expect a new episode to be published on Wednesday morning, complete with listener feedback, the BizCast Brief, and an interview chocked full of small business advice goodness!

The Next Episode is Coming!

For those of you who were looking forward to the next Startup BizCast, there will be a bit of a delay.  I’m leaving town for a few days tomorrow and have to wrap up some client work before I have a chance to finish production of episode 53.  Currently it’s about half produced.  It will be published before the end of the day, though.  Here’s a preview — the topic is “Greening Your Small Business”.  I have a great interview with some great tips on how to make your small business more ecologically friendly.  I also have a listener comment on the “favorite Startup BizCast” discussion and the BizCast Brief.  Don’t miss it!

Do You Have a Favorite Startup BizCast?

This week is the one year anniversary of the launch of Startup Bizcast, and it’s also the 50th episode! To honor the occasion, I’ll have new production elements and I’m also doing a “Best of the first 50″ episode! I’m going to pick out what I think is the best advice of the first 50 episodes. The show is sure to be a wealth of great advice. If you’ve listened to every show, maybe it will jog your memory. If you haven’t, maybe you’ll hear some tips you missed!

Do you have a favorite episode of Startup BizCast? If so, let me know and I’ll include a clip from that show! Let me know via comments in this post, or by sending me an email.

A note for those of you who have actually been interviewed on Startup BizCast — please don’t recommend your own show :)

I’m Taking Requests

I don’t have a guest booked for episode 47, which is coming up next week. I kind of wanted to do a solo episode, so I didn’t work too hard to find a guest, to be honest. The only problem is that it’s occurred to me that I don’t have a topic. So, I’m opening it up to you … the listener. Hit me up on my contact form or, preferably, in comments on this post. Let me know what you’d like to hear about. Obviously the topic needs to be something I know a bit about, otherwise I’ll just have to make it up … so try to keep it related to marketing, public relations, social media, or Web 2.0.

Fire away!

Startup BizCast Small Business Week Contest: Details Coming Soon!

National Small Business Week in the United States is April 21-25 this year, and Startup BizCast will be offering something special to mark the celebration of small business ownership! Details are still being worked out for the Startup BizCast Small Business Week Contest. I expect to make an official announcement next week about prizes.

One prize that I CAN talk about right now will be an opportunity to be interviewed and plug YOUR business during the episode of Startup BizCast that airs during small business week!

More details are coming, so be sure to check back on the blog and listen to the show!

If you have an idea for a prize, OR if you’d like to “donate” a prize in exchange for promotional consideration .. PLEASE contact me! I’m thinking of things like free small business counseling or online tools that are useful for small business owners, but I’m open to other ideas.

While I’m posting, I may as well give you a preview of this week’s Startup BizCast. In episode 39, which will publish tomorrow morning, we’ll hear from Jody Keenan. Jody is the Director of the Virginia Small Business Development Center and will have some tips for us about how to operate your small business during a weak economy.

New Episode Coming Soon: Small Business Taxes

I don’t normally like to preview episodes this early (before the episode is even in production!) but I’m fairly confident there won’t be any problems with this one, and it’s on a topic about which I suspect a lot of people are thinking. In episode 35 of Startup BizCast, I’ll interview June Walker. Ms. Walker is based in New Mexico and has been providing tax advice to “indies” since 1979.  She says an indie is anyone who is a sole proprietor, freelancer, subcontractor, free agent, or 1099 worker. That covers all small business owners who work for themselves and have no employees.  [Editor's Note: Ms. Walker called today to inform me that I didn't have this entirely correct.  She works with unincorporated small businesses, and some of her clients do have employees.  I hope I got it right this time.  Apologies.]

Ms. Walker will provide tax tips for the upcoming filing season and beyond, including answering the all-important question, “How do I choose a tax adviser?” We’re likely to tackle some other business issues that relate to taxes as well.

Episode 35 of Startup BizCast will be available for download on Wednesday, February 13. Make sure you get each episode as soon as it’s available by subscribing via iTunes, RSS, or at podcast directories like Podcast Pickle or Blubrry!
