What’s up?

Just a quick update on the show since we missed an episode last week.  I don’t know how important weekly episodes are to my listeners, but it irks me when I have to cancel a show.  Right now is a very busy time for EndGame PR and its podcast production service, BizPodz Productions and I may have to occasionally put that client work and family obligations in front of this podcast.  Unfortunately that may mean Startup BizCast is coming out a little less frequently or, at the very least less regularly.  This does NOT mean the show is going away … by any stretch of the word.

The good news, now that my pseudo-mea culpa is out of the way, is that we have a new episode coming tomorrow!  Check here, on the RSS feed, or on iTunes tomorrow morning to learn about using Twitter for Small Business!

Errrr … nevermind.

In my last post, I said this week’s episode would be a day late.  Nevermind.  There will be no episode this week.  The issue is a combination of being out of town all weekend, having a good bit of client work to do this week, and having a couple of sick kids.  The former left me a little behind, and the latter two mean there’s not much extra time to produce an episode of Startup BizCast.  I expect things will be back to normal next week, and I still expect to do an episode talking about how to use Twitter for business.

My apologies!

A day late, and hopefully not a dollar short.

FYI for everyone – Startup BizCast will be published a day later than usual this week.  I was out of town all weekend, which threw off my production schedule.  Expect a new episode on THURSDAY instead of Wednesday.  This week’s topic will be “Twitter for Small Business”.

Thanks for listening!

Happy New Year everyone!  Startup BizCast is back from the Christmas and New Year’s break, and ready for action!

In this episode, I give a few suggestions for resolutions for this year for small business owners.  More importantly, however, I’d like YOUR input.  What do you think small business owners should resolve to do this year?  Call (206) 350-7905 and leave me a voicemail with your suggestion (feel free to plug your business if you like) and I’ll use it in an upcoming episode!

I’m back to work after the Christmas and New Year’s holidays!  I hope your holidays were as good as mine, by the way!

Off for the Holidays

image1.jpgThere will be no new episodes of Startup BizCast in 2008. I’ve decided to take the last two weeks of the year off from recording, so I can enjoy the holidays. Keep the voicemails and emails coming during that time, and I’ll use them in 2009. See you in the new year, and have a safe holiday season!

Startup BizCast #76 – Small Business Public Speaking (Rich Hopkins)

There’s a large portion of the population that would probably rather take a bath in a tub full of those newly-discovered cyanide spitting pink millipedes than speak in front of a room full of people.  Public speaking is one of the top fears out there, but when you’re asked to talk about yourself and your business in front of potential customers, you simply should not turn it down.  This week’s guest is public speaker, author, and public speaking coach Rich Hopkins.  He has some great advice on how to nail that speaking opportunity.

Here’s a piece of bonus advice that Rich says he forgot to mention during the interview:
“Remember that the audience doesn’t know what you are going to say. Don’t get caught up in being ‘perfect’ – its the easiest way to throw yourself off track, and lose credibility as a speaker. Speak about what you know, and you will be able to go from Point A to Point B, without the audience knowing you skipped to Point C in between! ”

Also in this week’s episode, listener-submitted advice from Frances Jones of Cole Media Management on how to record your voice mail greeting properly!

The Data Doctors Tip for making Firefox even faster (for high-speed Internet users):

1. Type “about:config” into the address bar and hit return. Scroll down and look for the following entries:

network.http.pipelining
network.http.proxy.pipelining
network.http.pipelining.maxrequests

Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page loading.

2. Alter the entries as follows:

Set “network.http.pipelining” to “true”

Set “network.http.proxy.pipelining” to “true”

Set “network.http.pipelining.maxrequests” to some number like 30. This means it will make 30 requests at once.

3. Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it “nglayout.initialpaint.delay” and set its value to “0″. This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it receives.

If you’re using a broadband connection you’ll load pages MUCH faster now!”
